Green Peafowl
Scientific Name:
Pavo Muticus
Etymology:
Green Peafowl belongs to the genus Pavo, sharing it with one more species — Pavo cristatus or Indian Peafowl.
Well, they are generally more silent than Indian Peafowl.
This beautiful species is marked Endangered by IUCN.
Global population of this species is rapidly declining. It has shrunken to less than 500 individual.
Agricultural expansion, habitat loss, and illegal hunting all played a part in this process. This species no longer occurs in many areas of its past distribution.
Ranges: Myanmar and southern China, extending through Laos, and Thailand into Vietnam, Cambodia, Peninsular Malaysia and the islands of Java.
Hybrids: Although there is no natural range overlap with the Indian Peafowl, hybridisation with the Indian Peafowl is still a threat, leaving very few pure Green Peafowls in wild. Happens more often with individuals in captivity.
